Case Study

Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust

United Kingdom

Cambridgeshire Community Services NHS Trust is a leading healthcare provider delivering essential community health services across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. The Trust operates numerous healthcare facilities throughout the region, providing vital medical services including primary care, specialist clinics, and community health programmes.

As part of the NHS, the Trust is committed to delivering high-quality patient care whilst operating efficiently and sustainably. The organisation faces increasing pressure to reduce operational costs and environmental impact, particularly in light of the NHS’s ambitious net-zero carbon commitments and the need to redirect resources towards frontline healthcare services.

The Trust recognises that sustainable facility management is crucial for long-term viability and environmental responsibility within the healthcare sector.

These facilities rely on natural gas heating systems for both space heating (HVAC) and domestic hot water provision. The buildings’ energy consumption patterns follow typical school usage, with heating demands varying significantly based on seasonal temperature fluctuations and occupancy schedules.

EndoTherm was piloted across three strategically selected healthcare facilities within the Trust’s portfolio: Brookfields Health Centre in Cambridge, Oak Tree Centre in Huntingdon, and Dumbleton Medical Centre in St Neots. These facilities represent typical community healthcare infrastructure, each serving different patient populations and operational requirements.

Healthcare facilities face unique challenges in achieving energy efficiency whilst maintaining the exacting standards required for patient care:

NHS Financial Pressures: With healthcare budgets under unprecedented strain, every pound saved on utilities can be redirected to patient care. Energy costs represent a significant operational expense that directly impacts available resources for medical services.

Net Zero Commitments: The NHS has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions, with interim targets requiring substantial reductions in energy consumption. Healthcare providers must demonstrate measurable progress towards these ambitious environmental goals.

Operational Continuity: Healthcare facilities cannot compromise on heating performance. Patient comfort, staff productivity, and medical equipment functionality all depend on consistent, reliable heating systems operating optimally year-round.

Extended Operating Hours: Unlike many commercial buildings, healthcare facilities often operate extended hours or 24/7, creating sustained heating demands that amplify both costs and environmental impact.

Regulatory Compliance: Healthcare environments must meet strict temperature and comfort standards to ensure patient safety and regulatory compliance, making energy reduction challenging without compromising care quality.

Public Accountability: As publicly funded organisations, NHS Trusts face scrutiny over resource utilisation and environmental responsibility, requiring proven solutions that deliver measurable benefits.

The Trust needed a solution that could deliver immediate energy savings without any risk to heating performance or patient care standards.

EndoTherm’s 13-month pilot delivered exceptional environmental benefits, demonstrating significant potential for healthcare sector decarbonisation.

The results demonstrate EndoTherm’s capability to support NHS Trusts in making meaningful progress towards the health service’s net-zero commitments whilst simultaneously reducing operational costs. Notably, all three locations recouped their initial investment within the pilot period, proving that environmental responsibility and financial prudence can be achieved simultaneously in healthcare settings.

During the pilot period the sites saved 35,522kg CO2e, proving that EndoTherm can play a crucial role in helping educational institutions meet their environmental commitments without compromising operational performance. This GHG reduction is equivalent to:

How the Calgary Board of Education cut heating gas use across 56 schools

The Calgary Board of Education is one of Canada’s largest school districts, with a building portfolio that relies heavily on natural gas fired hydronic heating. The decision to pilot EndoTherm followed a competitive assessment of available efficiency measures and a commitment to evidence-based investment of public funds, a bar that shaped every phase that followed.

What MilliporeSigma’s EndoTherm Projects Reveal About Energy Efficiency in Life Sciences Manufacturing

Hydronic heating systems are widely used in commercial buildings, circulating heated water through boilers, pipes, and heat exchangers to provide space heating. While equipment efficiency has improved steadily over time, the thermal performance of the circulating fluid itself is often overlooked.
