A pilot of EndoTherm was run at NorQuest College in their main campus building in Edmonton, Alberta

After running a PTSA tracer the system volume was calculated and EndoTherm was installed on December 16th 2021.

The chosen methodology for EndoTherm takes guidance from the International Protocol for the Measurement & Verification of Performance (IPMVP) using historical billed natural gas consumption for the site. This data is normalised for variances in outside temperature using Heating Degree Days (HDD) from Oliver AGDM (CZOL) weather station, the geographically closest weather station to NorQuest College.

The baseline was constructed using historical data between October 2018 – November 2021.

The baseline shows a strong correlation between consumption (GJ) and HDD. The summer months were removed as educational facilities tend to have different occupancy / operational schedules in the summer compared to the winter period.

The consumption during the COVID-19 lock-down periods was also considered but there was no significant change in HDD normalised consumption during this period in 2022.

A polynomial trend-line gave the strongest correlation to the winter only dataset whilst capturing the noted increase in normalised consumption during the coldest months. The main outliers noted in the baseline is in January of each year. Operations are unsure why but consumption in January is generally higher than the rest of the year. Thus January 2022 will be considered separately.

For each month post-install. The known HDD will be input into the baseline trend-line equation to predict natural gas consumption based on the trend-line. This will be compared with recorded consumption to determine change in consumption. The Cumulative Sum (CuSum) of each month will be totalled together to provide the total saving for the pilot period.

A baseload of 20% has been determined for this pilot. This is the presumed natural gas consumption that is not linked to space heating and can include domestic hot water (DHW), commercial kitchens and other direct gas using equipment.

The pilot of EndoTherm started in January 2022 (considered separately) until the end of December 2022. Data was removed between May 2022 – September 2022 similar to the baseline.

Results

During the pilot period between February 2022 and December 2022 the data showed:

Total Predicted Consumption Total Actual Consumption Total Difference Saving (Whole Building) Saving (Baseload Removed)
15,972 GJ 14,539 GJ 1,433 GJ 8.97% 11.22%

Comparing January 2022

The baseline identified January as being a month with consumption typically higher than the rest of the year (HDD normalised) This did not occur in January 2021 but the site was predominately unoccupied as classes were online.

The site is showing improvements in efficiency compared to January 2019 and January 2020. January will be removed from the main analysis but can be considered separately and does show improvements:

Date HDD Actual Usage (GJ) Usage/HDD
January 2019 819.4 3,790.988 4.62
January 2020 1,016.1 4,424.657 4.35
January 2021 843.6 2,835 3.36
January 2022 905.1 3,582 3.95

How the Calgary Board of Education cut heating gas use across 56 schools

The Calgary Board of Education is one of Canada’s largest school districts, with a building portfolio that relies heavily on natural gas fired hydronic heating. The decision to pilot EndoTherm followed a competitive assessment of available efficiency measures and a commitment to evidence-based investment of public funds, a bar that shaped every phase that followed.

What MilliporeSigma’s EndoTherm Projects Reveal About Energy Efficiency in Life Sciences Manufacturing

Hydronic heating systems are widely used in commercial buildings, circulating heated water through boilers, pipes, and heat exchangers to provide space heating. While equipment efficiency has improved steadily over time, the thermal performance of the circulating fluid itself is often overlooked.
