Case Study

North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust

United Kingdom

The performance of EndoTherm was piloted by North Staffordshire Combined Healthcare NHS Trust in two phases. Phase 1 saw EndoTherm installed into the Greenfields Centre, an adult community mental health facility.

After a successful Phase 1 pilot, saving 13.68% on space heating energy consumption at Greenfields over 3 months, the trust decided to roll-out EndoTherm across the rest of its gas heated estate.

In Phase 2 a further 21 buildings were dosed with EndoTherm in December 2023.

Healthcare facilities in the UK operate under strict regulatory requirements for indoor environmental quality, including temperature and air circulation standards. These facilities must maintain consistent, comfortable temperatures for patients, many of whom may be vulnerable to temperature fluctuations due to illness or compromised immune systems.

This necessity often results in higher energy consumption compared to other building types. Additionally, healthcare facilities typically operate 24/7, requiring constant heating throughout the year, which significantly increases energy demand and makes it difficult to implement typical energy-saving measures like nighttime setbacks.

Another major challenge lies in the diverse nature of healthcare facility infrastructure across the UK. Many NHS trusts, including North Staffordshire, manage a mix of old and new buildings. Upgrading these systems or retrofitting buildings for better energy performance is often prohibitively expensive and can disrupt critical healthcare services.

Balancing these diverse needs while trying to reduce overall energy consumption presents a significant challenge for facility managers and energy conservation efforts.

How the Calgary Board of Education cut heating gas use across 56 schools

The Calgary Board of Education is one of Canada’s largest school districts, with a building portfolio that relies heavily on natural gas fired hydronic heating. The decision to pilot EndoTherm followed a competitive assessment of available efficiency measures and a commitment to evidence-based investment of public funds, a bar that shaped every phase that followed.

What MilliporeSigma’s EndoTherm Projects Reveal About Energy Efficiency in Life Sciences Manufacturing

Hydronic heating systems are widely used in commercial buildings, circulating heated water through boilers, pipes, and heat exchangers to provide space heating. While equipment efficiency has improved steadily over time, the thermal performance of the circulating fluid itself is often overlooked.
