How the Calgary Board of Education cut heating gas use across 56 schools
A measured, controlled, and independently verified multi-phase pilot program that expanded over several years from an eight-school trial into one of North America's largest public sector deployments of hydronic heating efficiency technology.
Heating a public school district through a sub-zero winter
The Calgary Board of Education is one of Canada's largest school districts, with a building portfolio that relies heavily on natural gas fired hydronic heating. In Calgary's sub-zero winter climate, heating represents the dominant energy load across its schools.
The decision to pilot EndoTherm followed a competitive assessment of available efficiency measures and a commitment to evidence-based investment of public funds, a bar that shaped every phase that followed.
A 100% organic additive that makes existing systems work harder
EndoTherm improves heat transfer within wet heating systems, no boiler replacement, no capital disruption. Independently proven to reduce space-heating energy consumption by up to 15%.
With no system downtime — heating stays on throughout.
Non-hazardous and compatible with existing inhibitors.
By improving heat transfer efficiency in the circulating fluid.
Delivered and Supported by Canadian partner PACE Solutions
The entire deployment is handled locally with our Canadian partner PACE Solutions, from pre-install checks through to long-term measurement and verification.
Delivered hand-in-hand with our Canadian partner, PACE Solutions, alongside their existing energy efficiency program.
Each heating circuit is inspected and verified clean and leak-free — a prerequisite for effective treatment.
A typical site install takes 1–2 hours with no disruption — heating stays on and buildings stay operational throughout.
Post-install support continues with top-ups and ongoing measurement & verification to protect performance.
From 8-school trial to 56-property rollout
Each phase built on verified results before the next was approved —
a disciplined, staged expansion.
8 schools — 4 treated, 4 controls. 28-month verified analysis.
25-school deployment with designated control sites.
11.33% average saving — consistent with the verified range.
Installed early 2026, extending the program further still.
Among the most comprehensive public-sector rollouts in North America.
Treated vs. control — a 14.81% differential
Four schools received EndoTherm; four matched schools with equivalent boilers and pumps were held as controls. Over 28 months, treated schools cut consumption while controls rose, the gap between them is the effect attributable to EndoTherm.
Analysis followed IPMVP Option C, using monthly billing data normalised against Heating Degree Day figures from Calgary International Airport (CYYC) at an 18.5°C baseload.
Prior to installation, PACE Solutions verified each heating circuit was clean and leak-free, a prerequisite for effective treatment.
Scaled to 25 schools and the savings held
The 14–15 month pilot coincided with community-rental reopening, which raised heating loads across the school district. Even so, treated sites delivered a 16.91% differential improvement over controls, full ROI achieved inside the pilot window.
Consistent performance, phase after phase
What the partners are saying
This program reflects the CBE's commitment to evidence-based decision making. The verified savings demonstrate that practical, low-disruption efficiency measures can play an important role in reducing operational costs and environmental impact.
This project demonstrates that meaningful efficiency gains do not always require major capital replacement programs. Proven optimisation technologies can deliver immediate operational benefits alongside existing water treatment efforts.
The CBE deployment is significant not only for its scale, but for the disciplined, methodical way it was evaluated over several years. The results reinforce the role low-disruption retrofit technologies can play in reducing both energy costs and emissions.
